Tovarich
by Jacques Deval, Translated by Robert E. Sherwood

The Crafton-Preyer Theatre

Tovarich tells the improbable tale of an indomitable Russian Grand Duchess and her dashing Prince of a husband living in exile in Paris. Tatiana and Mikail, on the run from the Bolsheviks who have overthrown the Russian monarchy, are forced to live as commoners and take employment as housemaid and butler in the home of wealthy banker. Though not well known today, the play was very popular when first written in the 1930’s and even adapted into a madcap 1938 film starring Claudette Colbert and Charles Boyer. Tovarich, which means comrade in Russian, is a sophisticated and farcical comedy of manners, disguise, and revelation.

Directed by John Staniunas
